CONSERVATION WORK

Committed to protecting & restoring Devon's biodiversity

CONSERVATION BUILDING & SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ACROSS NORTH DEVON

Conservation is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe historic buildings and the natural environment should work together. Whether we’re restoring a period cottage, converting a barn or improving a rural estate, we use traditional building methods that protect both the property and its surroundings.

Our work focuses on careful, considered craftsmanship – using the right materials, the right approach, and a deep respect for the building’s original character.

WHY IT MATTERS

Traditional buildings were designed to breathe and move naturally. Using modern materials without understanding this can cause long-term damage.

Our approach ensures that:

OUR APPROACH TO CONSERVATION

We don’t treat conservation as a separate service – it’s part of every project we undertake.

Our focus is simple: protect the building, respect the environment, and build for the long term.

We achieve this by:

Using breathable, natural materials suited to traditional buildings

Protecting existing wildlife habitats during works

Managing drainage and ground conditions responsibly

Reducing environmental impact through careful material sourcing

Creating landscapes that support biodiversity

Advising on long-term, sustainable maintenance

Every project is planned with both the building and its setting in mind.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Our conservation-led approach applies across a wide range of projects, including:

Heritage property restoration and sensitive repairs

Barn conversions that retain character and respect surroundings

Traditional landscaping using stone, lime and natural materials

Rural and residential new builds designed to sit naturally in the landscape

Larger estate and community projects with environmental considerations

From small repairs to full-scale developments, the same principle applies – do it properly, and do it with care.

LOCAL CONSERVATION EXPERTISE IN NORTH DEVON & CORNWALL

We work across Bideford, Barnstaple, Torrington, Bude, Launceston, Okehampton, and surrounding villages.

Being locally based allows us to understand the specific environmental challenges of the area, including soil types, local wildlife, and traditional building methods.

Our projects combine practical conservation with hands-on building expertise to protect both the property and its surroundings for the long term.

Cob Repairs & Lime Restoration

Andy has expert knowledge on cob & lime render. Upon discovery of the corner of our house walls coming away from each other, he worked hard and fast to rectify the situation. I have already booked him to re-render the rest of the house and have recommended him to friends and neighbours.

Cob Wall Restoration & Chimney Re-Building

Set in Stone undertook repairs to my cottage after a cob wall collapsed. This entailed enlarging and rebuilding the chimney from the ground up, replicating two slate capped shoulders, rebuilding a brick chimney stack and replacing sand and cement render on the entire front cottage wall with limestone render. Andy is a perfectionist. He and his team worked very hard in all weathers and I am delighted with the way my cottage looks now.
